Heddle release: June 3, 2026
I have a bunch of happy ladies, some horses and two star amulet shapes that are ready to go up for sale! These are made out of birch wood and painted with linseed oil. The faces of the ladies and the stars have been cut into the wood with a knife, so that they catch shadows and shapes are formed. There are 14 heddles going up for sale on June 3, 21.00 Swedish time.
I have also made some more distaffs!
I made a couple of these last year and ever since I’ve been itching to make more. These distaffs are just so fanciful! I have this thought about myself that I have a conscious style that gives me frame that I work within, but then I get an idea like this and the result just seems alien to me. Creating can feel like pulling out ideas from a fictive world, making imaginary shards from that world real in this one and usually I know what “world“ the items I make fit into, but with these distaffs, I’m not sure. It makes me very curious as to which context they belong in.
There are four blue floral distaffs going up for sale, and their price will be 6000 sek per piece.
Unpainted distaffs
It’s been a while since I had time to follow an idea but now I finally got to explore this one: Unpainted, oiled cherry distaffs. The first idea I had with these was to make a distaff that was as “un-worked“ as I could, so they wouldn’t be as pricey as the more heavily carved and painted ones. That lead me to stripping down the plant stalk design to just the silouette, and I couldn’t resist leaving the shape at the top hollow so one can fasten a band there. That band would then be wound around the wool, in order to keep in in place one you’ve dressed it the distaff.
I’m very pleased with these. I was gifted beautiful piece of cherry wood by my neighbor and in the end, the distaffs came out as these really archaic, clean objects that would look lovely hanging on a wall when not in use.
There are three unpainted cherry distaffs going up for sale, and because they look very similar I will be making only one post for them like I do for the other items in my webshop where I keep stock of many identical things. Their price will be 2500 Sek.
The distaffs will be published for sale at the same time as the heddles. Due to their size I will have to ship them in tubes, and because of this they cannot be co-shipped with other items. If you want a heddle and a distaff you can place them in the same order, and I’ll contact you about paying the separate shipping fee for the distaff.
(Umm please what is a distaff?)
A distaff is a stick that you wind your wool up on prior to spinning. You don’t need to do this, but of you prefer to card/comb a lot of wool at once and also want to bring the batch around to various places while spinning, it’s really handy. A distaff can be a simple stick, but I prefer them to at least have serrated edges so that the wool doesn’t slide down along the length of them.
A band or piece of string (Or, traditionally in some places in Sweden, an eel skin) is wound around the wool to keep it in place. The unpainted cherry distaffs above have a hole at the top where you can secure this band.
Pictured here are my private distaffs and a drop spindle. The drop spindle is made to my personal preferences and I have a few available in my web shop if you want one.
Hand for scale!
All heddles in the gallery below have their measurements stated but in case numbers seem abstract, here’s my hand with a bunch of heddles from the set, from the smallest to the largest.
A note on shipping to the USA:
US Shipping is currently available! I will ship via UPS and you can read more about my shipping terms here. The most important thing I want to highlight is that as a US recipient of commercial goods you’ll have to pay additional import fees, which will be charged separately by UPS.
This set consists of 14 heddles that will be released on Wednesday June 3, 21.00 Swedish time. The heddles will be for sale in the webshop, not here on the blog. This is a preview for you guys, so you can have a look at the heddles before they hit the web shop. Click or tap the images to enhance them and see the heddle measurements! If you are buying heddles from me for the first time you might want to read this blog post in preparation.
Ps. When browsing this blog post on a mobile device the text with the measurement + price info does not appear automatically when you tap a picture to enhance it. After enhancing the picture, look at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where there is a small white dot. Tap that and the info will appear!
