Mending with sashiko
January 24-25

Learn about the traditional Japanese sashiko techniques and how you can use them to repair your garments! This class gives you a nuanced and deep knowledge of what place sashiko holds in the Japanese cultural history and how it has come to be a favorite among visual menders today. Bring garments that you want to mend or focus on exploring different sashiko techniques, it’s up to you!
This class will be taught at the beautiful manor house on Långbro gård, where you also can book accommodation at their bed and breakfast.

Learn how to weave weft facing bands with me!
This is a class for those of you who know how to weave on a rigid heddle and want to explore how patterns can be built up throughout the weaving process.
I’m arranging this class together with American Swedish Institute and they will be hosting us on zoom, and the class will be divided into two sessions of two hours each with a little homework in between.

Sashiko class

What is the roots of Sashiko history and how has the tradition evolved over time? What is Sashiko today and who is entitled to it? Kerstin Neumüller shares her ideas and experiences during a one hour lecture, after which you'll get to try stitching your own sashiko pattern. During the day you can choose how complicated you want your sewing to be - The straightforward Moyo zashi, the mathematical Hitome zashi or the truly complicated Kogin zashi. Although all are based on the same fundamental stitch, they unfold completely different, unique patterns.

Mending knits: a talk
February 18
At Nordiska Muséet, Stockholm
Join me at Nordiska museet for an evening where we will focus on getting you started with mending your knitted garments! First, I’ll give a one hour talk about what to think about when mending clothes with focus on knitted garments, and then I’ll give you step-by-step instructions on some techniques. Afterwards you’re welcome to join in a “knitting after work“ in the museums restaurant where I will be available to answer questions and help you get started.

Online class: Advanced band weaving on a rigid heddle

Learn how to weave pick-up patterned bands online with me! I’m arranging this class together with American Swedish Institute and they will be hosting us on zoom, where I will show you how to weave these advanced bands with step by step instructions. The class will be divided into two sessions of two hours each, with a little homework in between. You are required to know basic rapport band weaving to be able to fully participate in this class.

Denim mending class

Do jeans come from Genoa or the city of Nime? How does the American gold rush of the mid 1800’s affect the fashion industry today and most important of all: What is the -real- purpose of the rivets? Kerstin walks you through the history of denim and shares her pro tips for buying jeans from her days as a denim store owner.
After the talk there will be an opportunity to mend a pair of your own jeans using hand sewing techniques. No previous sewing experience is required, but bring a pair of jeans in need of repair!

Although all are based on the same fundamental stitch, they unfold completely different, unique patterns.
