Heddle release: August 29, 2025

I have some new heddles for you! There are 6 girls with big skirts and 9 blue horses waiting to start weaving bands. I made these before starting my summer travels to teach classes, thinking I’d make a horse heddle set because I was feeling a bit creatively drained after making that fancy flower set in the spring. But it seemed there were some dancing girls who wanted to be made as well, and who am I to argue? You find them presented with prices and measurements at the bottom of this blog post. The date for the heddle release is August 29, 21.00 Swedish time.

A note on shipping to the USA: Due to the new tariffs that may or may not be coming into effect I have had to raise the shipping prices to the US for now, as UPS claims that they will be shipping to the US but their prices are a bit higher than Postnord that I usually ship with. I have made the decision to try to ship to you guys even though it will potentially become a bit of a mess, allowing you to take a chance if you want to instead of just shutting down the option. If you order an item and it gets returned to me due to shipping weirdness I’ll refund you for your order.

I am also releasing some more stuff that’s not heddles this time!

It’s been a while since last heddle release and that has had the effect that new ideas and products have been silently amassing in the corners of my workshop. First out: Extra fancy spindles!

“Wait, aren’t those the exact same spindles as you released before summer?“ Yeah, kind of. They sold out so I ordered another round from local craftsman Oscar Larsson and he sent me a video mid production saying that some of the wood had a really nice pattern. He had tried adding some layers of oil to one of them to see if the pattern would pop, and it sure did! When Oscar sent me a video of it I asked him to oil all the patterned ones. “Are you sure? The added time will make them more expensive…“ he asked. Yes, I’m sure. That’s gorgeous. It looks like a wood version of mother of pearl.
The oiled spindles are no different from the regular ones when it comes to size and weight, they are just more shiny. More sparkly.

The oil used for surface treatment is called “Danish oil“ and is a mix of Chinese tung oil, linseed oil and rosin. It makes the surface of the spindle repel fat and dirt from wool fleeces and it feels kind of like the spindles have been varnished, they are glossy and smooth to the touch.

The price of the oiled spindles will be 750 Sek. If you want one without oil at the slightly lower price of 570 Sek they are already available in the webshop.

Birch bark chip carving knife sheaths

Say that ten times in a row if you can! Before summer hit the fan I spent some evenings making tiny knife sheaths for the chip carving knives I sell in my webshop. They don’t come delivered with any sheath which is a bit annoying when you want to bring them anywhere, so a couple of years ago I made small birch bark sheaths for mine and I thought, Why not make some for you too? So I did. I also wove bands to make versions with handwoven bands because it looks so dang cute.

While made with a specific blade in mind, these sheaths will fit any small blade that is 3,5 cm long, 1 cm wide, 2 mm thick and really pointy.

The version with birch bark only will be 200 Sek/ piece, and the hand woven band versions will be 500 Sek/ piece.

I also made a bunch of blue starry knives. This is basically the exact same knife as the Mora 120 I sell already in the webshop, only I have given the handles a fresh cut surface, then painted them blue, then added five stars to every handle (I try to place them so you can always see at least two) by cutting their shapes out of the painted surface. I have also re-ground them and honed them, giving them a slightly hollow bevel which in turn makes it easier to hone them in the future. I know, that’s nerdy. What I’m trying to say is: These are not fresh out of the box from Morakniv, these are enhanced a bit. They come with a handmade birch bark sheath, also made by yours truly, which has a snug fit and will age like leather: darkening with time and use.
The price for a starry knife with a birch bark sheath will be 1000 Sek. If you want an unpainted knife with a regular sheath they are available for 350 Sek in the webshop already.

Back to the heddles!

These heddles are made out of dry birch wood, locally sourced from a friend and processed by me from tree trunk to weaving tool. They are painted with linseed oil, I use paint made for art and then dilute it with a little more oil to make it viscous.

All heddles in the gallery below have their measurements stated but in case numbers seem abstract, here’s my hand with a bunch of heddles from the set, from the smallest to the largest.

This set consists of 15 heddles that will be released on August 29, 21.00 Swedish time. The heddles will be for sale in the webshop, not here on the blog. This is a preview for you guys, so you can have a look at the heddles before they hit the web shop. Click or tap the images to enhance them and see the heddle measurements! If you are buying heddles from me for the first time you might want to read this blog post in preparation.

Ps. When browsing this blog post on a mobile device the text with the measurement + price info does not appear automatically when you tap a picture to enhance it. After enhancing the picture, look at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where there is a small white dot. Tap that and the info will appear!
